New to writing? Aspiring to become a better writer? Don’t know how or where to begin?
Writing starts with thinking, then it further becomes something more than just thoughts, hope you find the tips below useful enough to begin that writing journey.
Reading as many books as possible is one way to open up your creative mind. You don’t read a story to simply enjoy it, you read it to also analyze the structure of the story, the plot, the word choice, the characters, the pacing and more.
Ask your self; what do I like/ dislike about this story? Is it a type of story that particularly interest me? Do I resonate with it?
Pick a genre and start writing about it. Try your hand at short stories make sure your idea is a good one.
What is your character looking for? What does he or she want? What is preventing him or her from reaching their goals?
Your idea doesn’t have to be perfect, but be sure to give your story a meaning, a purpose and then write all the way.
How developed is your character? What is his or her backstory? What happened to them in the past and why are they behaving in a certain type of way?
Consistency is very important. When you start writing your story, create a schedule and stick to it. Write as often as possible. Write your drafts, go back and edit them then write again and more. The more you write, the better you become at writing. Use writing prompts and exercises to build your skills and expand your creativity. Outlining and story boarding, helps you push through writer’s block and having a good routine keeps you disciplined.
Write from the heart. Don’t compare yourself with others. Write what you know, what you want to know, what you feel, what you wish to become… whatever it is you wish to write about, it should come from a personal space. This makes the most impact on the readers. Resist the urge to compete or compare yourself to published authors. You’re not only writing to publish, you’re writing to make a difference. In due time, it’ll happen.
Break the rules. Experiment with new things. Don’t always stick to the conventional style of writing. Try new things. Do you prefer character driven stories to plot driven ones? Do you combine the two? Are you a single POV person or you prefer multiple POVs ? Exploring new ideas and unique writing styles makes you a better writer.
Writing is one beautiful thing. Keep striving to achieve your goals and write the book you would want to read.
